Bridge Crossing Optional…

Bridge Crossing Optional…

brdgcrossing Most anyone who is missing one, two, or three consecutive teeth has the option to replace them with a dental bridge. Dental bridges are a common treatment for missing teeth. They are minimally invasive, affordable, and today’s materials make them indistinguishable from the patient’s natural dentition. Function and appearance are two very important reasons to replace missing teeth, and today’s variety of dental treatments makes bridge crossing optional. Implants are another treatment for missing teeth. However, implants require a surgical procedure which makes them more invasive and more expensive.

Types of Dental Bridges

Removable Bridges:  The artificial teeth that are used for a dental bridge are referred to as pontics. Pontics are generally fabricated from porcelain and are held in place via metal framework that is attached to healthy adjacent teeth. A removable bridge can be taken out of the mouth for cleaning.

Fixed Bridges: A fixed bridge consists of a dental crown on each end of the pontics. The crowns are permanently bonded onto the remaining healthy teeth adjacent to the missing teeth. Fixed bridges provide more stability.

Implant Bridges: Implant bridges are another type of fixed dental bridge, requiring a more invasive surgical procedure due to the implants. To place an implant bridge, tiny biocompatible titanium posts are implanted into the patient’s jawbone. Instead of relying on natural teeth for support, the implant bridge is permanently affixed to the posts via dental crowns. Implant bridges are the strongest and most stable type of dental bridge.

Cost

Dental bridges can cost anywhere from $500 per pontic to $1,200 per pontic depending upon:

  • Materials used
  • Complexity of the procedure
  • Fabrication process
  • The dentist’s experience
