If you have been fretting over how your smile looks, the idea of having porcelain veneers placed on your teeth may have already crossed your mind. However, if you have not sought information directly from your dentist already, you may be unsure of how they go about creating and placing them on your teeth. The initial appointment you make when you are interested in veneers involves an evaluation, to make sure there are no issues that would complicate their placement. If there are worries that need to be addressed, your dentist can guide you through the preliminary restorative dental work that needs to be performed. If you have no preexisting issues, you can move forward with the placement process.
Issues That Should Be Addressed Before Your Veneers Are Placed
Your dentist will not be able to place veneers on teeth that suffer from cavities, and the treatment for these cavities can affect how you move forward with cosmetic care. Any teeth that have dental crowns placed on them will not be able to receive veneers. That being said, a porcelain crown may be able to fix whatever flaws you felt needed to be remedied. Ongoing gum disease should also be addressed – if your gums recede after your veneers are placed, portions of teeth under your gum line, which are not covered by your veneers, can be exposed.
How Your Veneers Are Permanently Bonded With Your Teeth
If you are able to move forward with having veneers placed, your dentist will first measure your teeth, and prepare them to hold them once they are crafted. When your custom veneers are constructed, your dentist can permanently bond them to the front of your teeth.
