Peavine Peak, Reno Nevada
Posted October 30, 2014 by Wager-Evans Dental
Looking for some outside exercise and enjoyment? Look no further. There are miles and miles of beauty in Reno Nevada especially if you know where to look. Take Peavine Peak for instance, understated from the looks it is at an elevation of 8,300 feet and was once mined for gold and quartz. If you are an outdoorsy person, your Reno dentists, Dr. William Wager and Dr. Brian Evans suggest you take a trip up to Peavine Peak.
About
Named for the wild pea vines found on the northeast side of the mountain by early prospectors, Peavine Peak is the highest point on Peavine mountain. Only three and a half miles from the California border, it is one of the most dominate geographical features in the Reno area. Boasting a variety of habitats including mountain mahogany’s, manzanita, other low-growing sub-alpine vegetation, and hills covered with sagebrush, Peavine Peak stands northwest of Reno Nevada and offers awe inspiring views of Truckee Meadows and the northern valleys. A popular birding route runs nearly seven miles up the mountain beginning at the junction of North Virginia Street and the unsigned access road. Many areas can be birded on foot, while other branch-off roads require high-clearance vehicles. The willows along the creek on Common Poorwill road offer good riparian birding and common sightings of the Common Poorwill during sunset.
At various areas throughout your way up the mountain (northern, eastern, and southern slopes) you can see the:
- Great Horned owl
- Barn owl
- Northern Saw-whet owl
- Long-eared owl
- Western Screech owl
- Northern Pygmy owl
- Common Poorwill
- Empidonax flycatchers
- Broad-tailed Hummingbird
