Reno Dentists: Remove Stains and Get Whiter Teeth

white smile Reno Did you know that your teeth yellow naturally over time? As we age, our tooth enamel thins, exposing the yellower layer beneath called dentin. However, other things can contribute to yellowing teeth. Foods and drinks with dark pigments, like coffee and soda, can stain teeth and strip away enamel. Poor oral hygiene can contribute to yellow teeth as well. Unfortunately, stained teeth may sap people’s confidence, preventing them from smiling as they try to hide their teeth. Hiding their smiles can lead to a lower quality of life because smiling has been shown to affect a person’s mood. Luckily, teeth do not have to remain stained. Professional teeth whitening can lighten your teeth several shades, restoring them to a lovely white that you’ll just have to show off. Make Sure You Brush Correctly

Brushing Keeps You Healthy

Oral health can be a breeze if you keep up good practices and visit Drs. Wager and Evans every six months. Make sure to brush 2-3 times every day and floss once. Like any habit, if you brush as often as you should, you may become complacent.  Don’t get sloppy with your oral health; experts agree that a healthy mouth can keep your body healthy, too.

Use Proper Brushing Technique

If you don’t use proper technique when you take care of your teeth, you might be hurting more than you’re helping. To brush effectively, hold your brush at a 45-degree angle at your gum line. This angle can help you avoid gum abrasion. Don’t brush across your teeth; instead, move your brush up and down, softly stroking your teeth. A lot of people forget about the  back surfaces completely. The back of your teeth is a crucial place to scrub because your tongue, which is usually caked with bacteria, presses against these surfaces all day long. Teeth Whitening Solutions for the Holidays

Over-The-Counter Whitening

The whitening kits that you find at big box stores and grocery stores can whiten teeth but may not be potent enough to make a dramatic difference in the color of your teeth. Professional whitening solutions are safe and reliable and can whiten teeth 8-10 shades in some cases. As the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure, teeth whitening can make a person appear younger and more attractive. Drs. Wager and Evans offer in-office and take-home whitening options in Reno.

What Causes Teeth to Yellow?

Tooth enamel is porous, so it can soak up stains. Various agents and factors contribute to the external discoloration of teeth, called extrensic stains. Using tobacco and consuming of pigmented foods and drinks, like tea, cola, coffee, and red wine, are prominent causes of yellowing. Age, too, causes teeth to discolor. From inside teeth, tetracycline medications (some antibiotics) can cause a brown or blue staining, and swallowing fluoride as a child can cause horizontal white lines called fluorosis. These are called intrinsic stains. Continue reading “Teeth Whitening Solutions for the Holidays”

The Evolution of Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is the most popular cosmetic dental procedure available today. For patients looking to whiten their teeth, take years off of their appearance, and breathe new life into their smiles, teeth whitening is an easy, convenient, and effective way to do so. Teeth whitening procedures are at the top of the cosmetic dentistry popularity poll, but where and when did the desire for a bright, white smile originate?

Toothpaste got its start in ancient Egyptian when the Egyptians used a wine-based mixture to scrub their teeth. We now know that red wine is one of the leading contributors of tooth staining, along with tobacco products, coffee, and soda.

Following suit of their peers in Egypt, the Romans used human urine as the main ingredient in their toothpaste. In fact, this trend was so popular among Roman aristocracy that human urine was imported from all over the world just so the royals could have white smiles! As unappealing (and dangerous) as this sounds to us today, the Romans were on to something. Ammonia, the main chemical in human urine, has lightening and brightening qualities that are effective on our tooth enamel, which is the second hardest naturally occurring substance in the world.

Luckily, we have much better options when it comes to whitening our smiles these days. Dr. William Wager and Dr. Brian Evans, family and cosmetic dentists in Reno, Nevada, offer in-office and at-home teeth whitening to their patients. Both of these methods work, and you have the freedom to choose which method is right for you. For immediate results, in-office whitening is preferable. To whiten your teeth in the privacy of your home, you may prefer using custom whitening trays and professional-strength bleaching gel.

  • 69 percent of adults have lost at least one tooth.

Conservative Cosmetic Dentistry for a Brand New Smile

If you look in the mirror and see minor flaws in your smile, you should be aware that there are two cosmetic dental procedures that offer fast, effective solutions: bonding and contouring.

The process of adding to tooth structure is called bonding. The practice of reshaping teeth by removing tooth structure is called recontouring. Usually, bonding and contouring occur during one appointment and may be done separately or in conjunction with one another.

Bonding is done with composite resin, which is the same material used for all-white fillings. This procedure is usually used to close a gap between teeth or to repair a chip in a tooth. These restorations will be tinted to match your existing tooth structure, so it will appear unnoticeable. Bonding can also be used as a permanent teeth whitening solution.

Contouring can be used to smooth sharp canine teeth or soften rough or jagged edges on teeth. A tiny portion of enamel is gently removed during recontouring for a smoother, softer, appearance.

We’re Dr. Brian Evans and Dr. William Wager, and we recommend bonding and contouring to patients with a chipped, gapped, or misshapen smile. Make an appointment in our dental office today by calling (775) 800-4845. Conveniently located in Reno, Nevada, we welcome residents from Spanish Springs, Sparks, Incline Village, Dayton, Fernley, and the surrounding areas.
